Impaired decision-making on the basis of both reward and punishment information in individuals with psychopathy

چکیده
In this study, we examined decision-making to rewarding or punishing stimuli in individuals with psychopathy (n = 21) and comparison individuals (n = 19) using the Differential Reward/Punishment Learning Task. In this task, the participant chooses between two objects associated with different levels of reward or punishment. Thus, response choice indexes not only reward/punishment sensitivity but also sensitivity to reward/punishment level according to inter-stimulus reinforcement distance. Individuals with psychopathy showed significant impairment when choosing between objects associated with differential levels of reward but also significantly greater impairment when choosing between objects associated with differential levels of punishment. However, the two groups were comparably affected by inter-stimulus reinforcement distance. The results are discussed with reference to current models of psychopathy. 2006 Elsevier Ltd. Punishment and psychopathy: a case-control functional MRI investigation of reinforcement learning in violent antisocial personality disordered men.
BACKGROUND Men with antisocial personality disorder show lifelong abnormalities in adaptive decision making guided by the weighing up of reward and punishment information. Among men with antisocial personality disorder, modification of the behaviour of those with additional diagnoses of psychopathy seems particularly resistant to punishment. METHODS We did a case-control functional MRI (fMRI)...
متن کاملThe effects of reward and punishment on response inhibition in non-clinical psychopathy
Response inhibition is an important control mechanism in reacting effectively to sudden changes in the environment, and a deficit in this mechanism is thought to be a main feature of various impulse control disorders, including psychopathy. This study investigated the effects of reward and punishment on the inhibitory capabilities of non-clinical participants with both high and low levels of ps...
متن کاملReward/Punishment reversal learning in older suicide attempters.
OBJECTIVE Suicide rates are high in old age, and the contribution of cognitive risk factors remains poorly understood. Suicide may be viewed as an outcome of an altered decision process. The authors hypothesized that impairment in reward/punishment-based learning, a component of affective decision making, is associated with attempted suicide in late-life depression. They expected that suicide a...
متن کاملDifferential impairments underlying decision making in anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa: a cognitive modeling analysis.
OBJECTIVE This study examined the underlying processes of decision-making impairments in individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN). We deconstructed their performance on the widely used decision task, the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) into cognitive, motivational, and response processes using cognitive modeling analysis. We hypothesized that IGT performance would be characteriz...
متن کاملInfluence of depression symptoms on history-independent reward and punishment processing.
Prior research indicates that depressed individuals are less responsive to rewards and more sensitive to punishments than non-depressed individuals. This study examines decision-making under reward maximizing or punishment minimizing conditions among adults with low (n=47) or high (n=48) depression symptoms. We utilized a history-independent decision-making task where learning is experience-bas...
